How can we achieve liberation?

Question: How can we achieve liberation?

liberation-1Answer: First we must define liberation. It is not that someday in the distant future we will suddenly be totally liberated by some divine force. One kind of liberation is the transformation of our internal suffering into internal happiness. Buddhism does not say that in this life we should suffer, suffer, suffer until an angel comes down and rides us on his back up to heaven. Nobody but us can liberate ourselves. To be able to achieve this goal, we must first adjust our own minds through learning and practicing Buddhadharma. All Buddhism teachings tell us how to be liberated but we need to rely on a good teacher to guide us on how to practice. Buddhism is not just a religion, or one kind of philosophy, as a lot of people think, it is a science of life. It requires us not to just learn it theoretically, but practice it in the right way, under the supervision of good teachers. If we can possess internal happiness, no matter what pressures our external circumstances present, our hearts will remain unburdened. Therefore, in our spiritual practice we first purify our own mind. This brings us happiness and peace, which in turn enables us to help other beings.
